PROJECT LOOP
CONCEPT LIGHTWEIGHT SEAT SHELLS
Project Loop is a collaboration between SIMONA Boltaron and DOY design. Both companies share a common goal to develop more sustainable products in the commercial aviation sector and close the life cycle loop for our future products. This display features duets of Boltaron® 9000 Series lightweight materials, and 9865 TERREFORM recycled grade thermoplastic sheet in varying material styles.
Designed for Recyclability
The Loop seat shell is constructed from different thermoformed moldings which are designed to be recycled and formed again for the same use as they were originally intended. To support this approach designers and engineers need to consider the way these parts relate to other components in the seat so they can be readily separated after use. Our design challenge is to use these materials in a complimentary way to optimize their efficiency and make them work together but join them in a way where we reduce the energy needed for separation.
Designed for Weight Optimization
Each Loop seat shell was designed to be seriously lightweight and reduce load on the aircraft. Thanks to the great impact performance of Boltaron materials, the shells can be specified at a thin gauge while still maintaining durability and rigidity. Thus providing excellent performance for critical impact areas to help reduce the inherent development risks associated with seat certification. Each 2 mm shell weighs less than 1,320 grams, or 2.9 pounds. That is roughly the weight of a laptop or an average size pineapple.
Designed for Visual Impact
The Loop makes a visual impact through its combinations of selected surface finishes made possible by SIMONA Boltaron’s unique production capabilities. Each shell combines a variation of these processes ranging from economical to high-end finishes. These custom colors, pearlescent and metallic effects, pressed and extruded textures and decorative prints can be mixed and matched in endless pairings, providing limitless versatility to one mold.
